English weaponry was much the same across the entire country so the armies of Kent and Mercia would have been equipped similarly. All men went to war with a shield, a spear and a small sidearm. The shield was invariably round, made of wood and was about 3 feet across. The face was covered in leather that had been treated to make it extremely hard, and the rim was usually bound with metal or more leather to keep the wood planks in place. At the centre was a metal shield boss behind which was the handle. Shields were primarily defensive, but could be used to punch an enemy to the ground.
